The government has said university applicants in England will get clearer information about student loans before they borrow.
Ministers will make it clearer that governments can change repayment rules and that different career choices can affect how much borrowers repay. They accepted some, but not all, of the recommendations made by MPs after an inquiry into student loans. That inquiry found that the way loans had been presented to teenagers amounted to mis-selling, after the BBC revealed that repayments had been compared to £30-a-month phone contracts.
The debate centres on Plan 2 loans, issued in England between September 2012 and July 2023. Campaigners want a lower interest rate and repayment rate, and a reversal of the freeze on the repayment threshold at £29,385. The government did not say whether it would unfreeze the threshold, but said it keeps all aspects of student finance under review.
