Curfew in Mauritius after the island's worst riots in decades

Police in Mauritius have imposed an overnight curfew to bring an end to the worst riots on the island in decades.

Protests over water shortages and the high cost of living began a week ago. They turned violent on Friday, when a woman was shot and wounded by police at a roadblock. The circumstances are not yet clear, but the officer involved has been arrested and remanded in custody.

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam ordered the curfew on Tuesday, and the government has since extended it until Friday morning. Officials say there were reports of looting, arson and damage to police stations, traffic lights and CCTV, and seven police officers were injured.

At least 94 people have been arrested, 16 of them minors. The government says it will consider lowering the age at which minors can be detained and prosecuted from 14 to 12, and the education ministry has cancelled classes for Thursday and Friday.
