Nineteen injured as bus hits train at the Channel Tunnel in France

A bus has hit a stationary freight train near the French entrance to the Channel Tunnel, injuring the driver and 18 passengers, French authorities say.

The minibus, which was carrying lorry drivers due to take the Le Shuttle rail service, struck the train at the loading platform in Coquelles, near Calais, at 19:27 local time on Thursday. The driver and one passenger were seriously injured and taken away by helicopter, but local officials say none of the injuries is life-threatening.

Freight and Eurostar passenger traffic was not disrupted after a brief stoppage to evacuate the injured. The sub-prefect for the area said the cause is not yet known and that this was the first incident of its kind on an Eurotunnel loading platform. An investigation has begun.
